Many people expect that a book exists tracing the lineage of every family or surname back many generations and all that they must do is find the book for their family, just as they might expect to find a family coat of arms. Unfortunately, such is not the case.
Although there are many books that do trace the lineage of one family or another, such a work is typically considerable original research. Many such family histories or genealogies, published and unpublished, can be found through various libraries, archives, historical societies, and genealogical societies, or on the Internet. There are also several companies that specialize in obtaining and publishing family histories for profit, as well as organizations that collect such materials and make them available without charge on the Internet, the Internet Archive and Google Books, for example.
