Family Tree Climbers
Born somewhere in TX in 1842, James fought in the Civil War in the 1st MS Cavalry. He is first found in Gatesville, Coryell, TX, in 1873, the year his wife Jeffersonia died. The next year he married Mattie Hammack in Gatesville. In 1880, when their baby daughter Ocelalu Juanita was only a few months old, he died (supposedly of wounds sustained during the war) and was buried in the Oddfellows' Cemetery in Gatesville. His middle initial H is incorrectly recorded on 1880 census transcriptions as an A. While he lived in Gatesville, he was a saloon keeper. He had a son named Jessie with his first wife.
