The Wall

Vietnam Wall of Honor

Overview | Search

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial honors the men and women who served when their Nation called upon them -- currently there are 58,256 names listed. Approximately 1200 of these are listed as missing (MIA's, POW's, and others). The number of names can change annually on Memorial day if the Department of Veterans Affairs receives additional information.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is located near the Washington Memorial on the National Mall in Washington D.C., along Constitution Avenue between 21st and 23rd Streets. The design (by an undergraduate at Yale University, Maya Ying Lin) and plans received final Federal approval in 1982, and work at the site begun shortly thereafter. The official groundbreaking took place on March 26, 1982, and the wall was completed in late October.

The names are arranged in chronological order, according to the date of casualty and within each day, the names are alphabetized. The list starts and ends at the vertex (apex), beginning with 1959 and ending with 1975.

Interactive Vietnam Veterans Memorial

In March 2008, Footnote.com the Footnote mark and the National Archives and Records Administration announced the release of an online interactive photo of the Vietnam War Memorial. In addition to releasing this unique version of the Wall, Footnote.com the Footnote mark enables visitors to search the Wall for people they know and pay tribute by adding photos, comments and stories of those who lost their lives during the Vietnam conflict.

Footnote.com the Footnote mark has extracted information from National Archives electronic records of each Vietnam casualty and linked it to the corresponding name on the Wall. The casualty records are from the Combat Area Casualties Current File from the records of the Secretary of Defense and from Records with Unit Information on Military Personnel Who Died during the Vietnam War, from records that were donated to the National Archives by Richard Coffelt, Richard Arnold, and David Argabright.
