Have you ever thought it might be possible someone else has already done research on your family tree?
How would you feel if you discovered a book, written years ago, or just yesterday, on your ancestors?
Exciting thought, isn't it?
That's exactly what happened to me! I had been beating my head against a brick wall, looking for records of my family's ancestors. Then, I found that facsimiles of self-published genealogies are available here at Genealogy Today. When I entered my surname in their database search, I was thrilled to find one on my family! Originally published in 1912, this book was the jumpstart my project needed.
Are you tired of brick walls, and false leads?
It's absolutely uncanny. Over 90 years ago, the author had the same frustrations I was experiencing! Just listen to his words:
"The search and research by the writer began in 1904, and proved to be a stupendous undertaking, unexpected difficulties and disappointments arising to such an extent that in 1907 the search was abandoned indefinitely."
Sound familiar? Yeah, me too - I can't tell you how many times I've felt like giving up!
But he continues:
"Three and one-half years later unexpectedly and by sheer luck the writer ran across information leading up to the right trail, which encouraged a renewal of the research to a successful termination."
He didn't write about the kind of luck he had, but I can tell you about mine. It was in discovering this little-known resource – available here at Genealogy Today!
This book was a true eye-opener. I never thought that there was anyone, living or dead, who might have taken an interest in my family tree ... and here was an 87- page book, full of pictures and biographies of family members I never knew existed.
What a treasure!
Within 15-minutes, I added 25 "new" members of the family to my family tree! I was able to scan the photos included in the book, and put them on the tree. It's now "alive" with faces, names and dates of those who came before me. I feel imbedded in a real family – not just imagined or dreamed-of people, but real people!
Another remarkable thing: the author of the book lived and fought through the Civil War as a Union soldier. His tale of a near-fatal injury, and his long recovery in the Jarvis Hospital in Baltimore brought tears to my eyes! What strength of character, what vitality! Truly, I would like to think that characteristic lives on in me, and my children. I am so proud to know about him, and that might never have been possible without this book.
Self-Published Family Histories: Over 14,000 genealogies-in-print now available!
The original genealogies were usually printed in small editions – sometimes only two hundred copies, or less. They are now very rare and extremely difficult to find.
These facsimiles:
- are carefully reproduced with top-of-the-line digital equipment
- meet Library of Congress standards for strength and permanence
- are photographic facsimiles that will outlast the fragile originals
- often larger-than-original page size, give ample room for notes and additions
- are printed on acid-free paper
- meet Library of Congress standards for strength and permanence
- are reasonably priced, often less than $20
What does that mean for you?
It means:
- cost-effective, yet "priceless" information at your fingertips
- excellent print and binding quality assures durability and longevity
- reduced research & travel costs
- you will have a family heirloom to pass on to your children and grandchildren
Such a book can cut years off your project, and save you hundreds of dollars!
Genealogical research can get expensive. You know your family's genealogy budget – we all have one, and it's never enough to do everything you would like to do.
In this case, the author traveled far and wide to complete his research, going to 12 cities in 4 states and the Library of Congress, in Washington D.C. Can you afford to do such traveling? I know I can't! Because of that fact alone, I would have completely missed those discoveries!
