From the introduction: "Two thousand three hundred and thirty-seven (2337) portraits make this the most comprehensive collection eve published for any city in the world. The portraits being exact reproductions of photographs from life, have value beyond those engraved by hand. More than fifteen hundred original photographs have been made for this collection, and to make a resonably satisfactory selection it was necessary to accumulate more than five thousand photographs. They are arranged mainly in a succession of groups, and as any one looks over the pages, each successive group increases in interest."
