Genealogy Today Earns TRUSTe Privacy Seal

Genealogy Today (www.genealogytoday.com) has become the first genealogy Web site to be certified to display the Children's Privacy Seal from TRUSTe, exemplifying its commitment to consumer privacy and security. Genealogy Today's Web site has passed TRUSTe's extensive evaluation of its privacy practices and will follow TRUSTe's stringent requirements.

TRUSTe is an independent, nonprofit organization that reviews online merchants' privacy programs. Its requirements include the merchants' disclosure of their collection and use practices of personal information, and giving site users the option of consenting to how their information is used and shared. By displaying the TRUSTe privacy seal, GenealogyToday.com will assure its customers about how the company's Web site handles personally identifiable information.

"We are proud to be the first and only genealogy company to receive the TRUSTe Children's Privacy Seal," stated Illya D'Addezio, owner of Genealogy Today. "Privacy is an extremely important issue, and we are confident that our visitors will continue to trust us and find GenealogyToday.com to be a safe site for researchers of all ages."

The Children's Privacy Seal applies to sites that are fully or partially targeted towards children under the age of 13 and that knowingly collect or maintain their personal information. In addition, COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) seal holders abide by the requirements of TRUSTe's standard Web Privacy Seal, including ongoing site monitoring and alternative dispute resolution.

The TRUSTe Web Privacy Seal is a consumer branded symbol that signifies that a Web site has posted a privacy statement and, moreover, that the company's Web site information gathering and dissemination practices address the elements of notice, choice, access, security and redress outlined in the Federal Trade Commission's Fair Information Practices.

Specifically, TRUSTe's members agree to:

  • Disclose their information gathering and dissemination practices
  • Give consumers choice to limit any secondary uses of their personal information through opt-out
  • Provide consumers with access to their personal information to correct any inaccuracies
  • Ensure that reasonable security mechanisms are being used to protect the data that is collected

Beginning immediately, GenealogyToday.com will prominently display the TRUSTe Privacy Seal on its Web site. The TRUSTe seal offers a direct link to GenealogyToday.com's privacy statement, which provides Web site visitors with details of the company's privacy and security policies.

"TRUSTe's independent certification of Genealogy Today's privacy practices reaffirms that our visitors will always have complete control over their personal information, and that we will never disclose that information to third parties without their express permission," added Illya. "We're proud to display the TRUSTe seal on the Genealogy Today Web site."
